We recently held an informational session for those interested in becoming a certified Volunteer Administrator.

Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA) is the only international professional certification in volunteer resource management. Sponsored by the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration (CCVA), the competency-based credential measures an individual’s “knowledge-in-use” — the application of knowledge and skills — and recognizes professionals who meet high standards and pass a rigorous exam. Successful candidates earn the designation “CVA.”

Please consider joining our study group, which will meet bi-weekly starting June 2. The CVA study group is a benefit from GSSA open to all members and non-members preparing for the Fall 2025 exam led by facilitators who have earned their CVA certification.

On June 2, 2025 @ 4 PM EST we reviewed the study resources and an overview of chapters one and two of the textbook, Volunteer Administration: Professional Practice, 4th edition. (Earlier editions can be used) After the introduction session, we will meet every other Monday at 4:00pm ET for a total of 9 sessions ending September 22nd.

The study schedule is based on reading 1-2 chapters of the CVA textbook, presenting and discussing those chapters during the session.

Sessions will be recorded so if you are unable to attend you can review the session afterwards.

In addition, if you want to learn more about the CVA exam logistics, you can view the GSSA CVA Introduction slide deck and recording. Of course, you can also join an upcoming introduction through the CVA site.
The expectation is that everyone will take a chapter to present. See excel spreadsheet here. Some things to keep in mind when choosing and presenting a chapter.
- Read through the chapter at least twice. Then outline it and create some thinking questions.
- Come up with an interactive experience for the group—perhaps a set of questions folks can answer Jeopardy style or scenarios people can play out or something better and more clever( autocorrect is telling me to replace that with “cleverer” but really?!) to help everyone solidify the information from that chapter.
- Remember, we’ll have about 15-20 minutes for each activity and then a few minutes for the debrief if we’re doing two chapters per session.
